The thought had been around for years.
To create a lending library in Mirtos.
This thought existed in many people of our village. It matured at the end of October 2022 and began to take shape.
A small group of volunteers asked the President of the Community’s Local Council to sponsor the effort. With a willingness to cooperate, the Community adopted the idea.
The first meeting of the volunteers took place on Wednesday, November 02, 2022, at 19:00 in the Manolis Daskalaki room in Mirtos Square. More than 20 residents of Mirtos discussed and decided to establish a MIRTOS LENDING LIBRARY. They decided the opening hours of the library, voted on its Internal Regulation, appointed a coordinating committee of 4 volunteers who will open the library and be responsible for coordinating the group. The group is open and constantly accepting new members.
The goal is big!
Without bookcases to place the books, without books the effort seemed too difficult.
However, the love of the villagers, as well as the love of the book’s friends from other cities made the case easier. Some library furniture was found by the Municipal library of Ierapetra and also by the association « Educational Shelter of Ierapetra ». Then came a large donation of 10 bookshelves from a bookstore in Ierapetra (CHOICE Bookstore) and the space was full!
Large quantities of books began to flow in. Book donations came from ordinary people and businesses of Mirtos, from book lovers from other areas, from the Library & Information Center (ELMEPA) of the Hellenic Mediterranean University of Crete and from the library of Stavrochori. The cafe « G-spot » of Ierapetra donated board games. The shelves are full! But books are never enough. We want more!
Vangelis Fragiadakis from Mirtos donated to the Library: a new desktop computer with all accessories (screen, keyboard, mouse, UPS) as well as a printer with a total value of 550 euros. Friends of the Library Angela Sturmayr and Jurrie Eilers donated a used desktop computer, monitor and keyboard and Gianna Daskalaki donated a used printer.
